MvZoo is not really a zoo on Martha's Vineyard (sorry kids).  But you're here now, so have fun exploring.  And if you're not here, why not try and visit on a whim?  The animals are on display here and there on Martha's Vineyard in the summer.  Sometimes they even visit the big city.

Years ago I used to scribble and doodle while Cynthia sold jewelry at outdoor markets in the summertime.  Now I've gone from doodling to illustrating, from pencil to graphite, from paint to pigment (although this is all really one and the same).  I've been doing basically the same thing since I was four years old, only now I have a website.

For those interested in how this happens:  Usually I begin with a blank piece of watercolor paper, and I move my pencil in several directions until an animal or creature appears. I use a lot of eraser.  Next I use water and pigments to fill in the white spaces between the pencil lines.  Then when I'm tired of painting and penciling I look at the expression on the creature on the paper.   Sometimes the animal has a lot to say; other times not.  Either way, the staring contest ends with a little caption that I inscribe at the bottom of the painting.

I realize on some level that this is really not about animals, but about the way they remind us of ourselves and others.  If you think about it, people are the strangest creatures on earth.  If you can make a 26 legged seaworm look like someone, that sort of says something, doesn't it?
